LEGACY STORY
From the desk of Founder Gina Lee:
Legacy Sports Institute is the culmination of a story that began back in the 1940s, when Dr. Jack Hughston and his Duke University physical therapy student, Celia Robson, envisioned sports medicine in Columbus, Georgia. Their pioneering model brought together physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers, forming the Hughston Clinic-a revolutionary force in sports medicine.

In 1973, Dr. James Andrews, inspired by Dr. Hughston's work, joined him in Georgia before moving to Birmingham, Alabama to establish the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center and the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), a non-profit organization focused on sports medicine research and education. ASMI has had the #1 sports medicine fellowship for 28 consecutive years. The program has trained over 480 physicians to receive a sports medicine specialty. Additionally, ASMI is one of the most widely published sports medicine research programs in the United States and recognized nationally and internationally for its excellence in the field.

In 2000, Gina Lee, mentored by Celia Robson at Mississippi State University, would join Dr. Andrews, Dr. Jeff Dugas, and Dr. Lyle Cain, in continuing the tradition of advancing orthopedic and sports medicine care. Over the next two decades, she would work closely with world class industry experts, professional athletes, and organizations, gaining firsthand insight into the challenges of athlete healthcare and the growing epidemic of sports injuries.

Motivated by these experiences, Gina set out to address the fragmentation she had observed. Built on the legacy of the past while forging one for the future, she founded Legacy Sports Institute, a comprehensive campus that fosters daily seamless collaborations, creating a unique continuum of care for athletes while also connecting sports and innovation with private healthcare, hospitals, academic and research institutions, and Fortune 500 brands.

Guided by a rich history of research, education, and excellence, Legacy Sports Institute will continue to advance the future of athlete healthcare - expanding a vision that began over 80 years ago.
